SHOWREEL:Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani:Ranbir displaly his acting histrionics.

Rajkumar Santoshi,the man behind highly acclaimed and critical sucess comes and delivers to you Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani.What do you do?You want it to be on the same level of one of the best comedies made by the same man Andaz Apna Apna.Or,the script which gave fabulous performances and mindblowing screenplays like Ghayal,Ghatak,Damini and Khakee.Remember Amitabh’s memorable dialogues in Khakee or Sunny Deol’s dialogue in Ghatak and Damini or the technically brilliant China Gate.Unfortunately,APKGK fails on this count.Make no mistake,Ajab Prem is a highly entertaining flick with Ranbir Kappor in his elements,Katrina Kaif so loveable and Yes,Salman Khan as himself.But,Rajkumar Santoshi could have chosen a better script since the name Santoshi is equal to cinematic brilliance,a quality product.
Let’s have a look at what didn’t click with this latest Santoshi venture:
Firstly,there are so many scenes borrowed from his own original script and the master-piece,Andaz Apna Apna.The climax scene with the clumsy villain reminds us too much of crime master Gogo.The climax should have been better with something new since Rajkumar Santoshi is Rajkumar Santoshi not a David Dhawan.
Secondly,too many twists and turns in the movie which doesn’t really fit in today’s contemporary mindset.It’s more than illogical.Kats is in love with Upen Patel..yawn but his father is a politician and opposes this match since Kats is a christian and it will affect his vote bank.His right arm is planning to fly Upen by force to Canada…in today’s time well..Raj-ji just fire your script writer..in the midway Kat’s is kidnapped by some goondas.The father-Politician finally accept her as his bahu.How come this change of mind.
The worst thing about Ajab Prem ki Ghazab Kahani is the Ghazab,ulta,bekaar Upen Patel.I wonder what this man is doing in movies.Is he really acting?!or is he being himself?I’m surprised because in both ways he sucks.He is not just expressionless,looks like an idiot,a dumb-ass but he screws the Hindi he is trying to speak.Was he speaking chinese or some alien language.The accent is not even British or proper English.Normally,a Rajkumar Santoshi has the abilities to bring the best in an average actor.Tushar Kapoor in Khakee.
Now,let’s have a look at the plus-points.
Firstly,the best thing about APKGK IS Ranbir Kapoor.The movie belongs entirely to this dude.From his first film Saawariya to Wake up Sid,I have always maintained that he is the best thing that happened to the film industry.In this one,his comic timing is perfect and his shines in almost every scene of the movie.The delightful moments is where he mutters”Prem naam hai mere,Prem Chopra” or”Kutta” in response to Kats.Whether it’s the emotional scene,comedy or romance,Ranbir is the winner.Somehow,I feel the script has suffered because it was written to show Ranbir histrionics as an actor.Ranbir shows that he has the potential to win the hearts of the audience and has the making of a superstar.Clearly,he is the able successor to Rishi Kapoor and believe me,he will carry the legacy of the Kapoor family with grace and dignity.
Secondly,kudos to Santoshi-ji for creating an amazing chemistry between Ranbir and Katrina.They make such an endearing and magical couple.As if made for each other.Kats or Katrina Kaif has improved her Hindi diction and is improving day by day.Rajkumar Santoshi deserves applause for shedding this sensuous glam-doll image and portrays Katrina as the cute,the girl next-door image so well.She is lovely as the christain girl,Jenny.Smita Jaykar as Ranbir mom provide able support in the film.
Thirdly,some of my stand-out scenes.Ranbir takes Kats home and when his mom asked whether she ran away from home,Ranbir replies”shee..yeh aisi ladki nahin hai,main usse bhaagalaya”.Hilarious.Salman Khan looks cool in his own avataar and his says to Ranbir that you are scared to introduce Kats to me as if she is not your girlfriend but my own girlfriend.More truer than that,you die.Or when Ranbir says to his love lady that he will dress her as glamour queen,Katrina Kaif.
Lastly,Pritam music is soulful and is already a hit with the audience.After such a long time,he has given such beautiful music.Whether it’s Prem ki naiyya,Mein teri dhadkan,Tu jaane Na or Follow me.It’s a clear winner.
My Verdict:
From an entertainment point of view,go for it and watch Ranbir’s abilities as an actor and for the Ranbir-Katrina chemistry.Plus,it is a film for the young people..on this count,it is paisa vasool.My issue is that Director Rajkumar Santoshi is one of the best directors with the master-piece Andaz Apna Apna to his credit,so APKGK is below his potential from the story point of view and so many similarities from AAA leads to odious comparisons.If you can forget it,you are in for a good time.After Abhishek Bachchan,the next superstar has already arrived and he bears the name,Ranbir Raj Kapoor.Well done,dude.Filmfare Best actor 2009!Oh!yeah!Move over SRK.
